Dana White enters grease gate
Whilst reading the MMA blogs and UFC comments, I came across Dana White’s new interview about “grease gate”.
Ever since UFC 94 – Georges St Pierre Vs BJ Penn – it has been all about GSP’s greased down between rounds by his corner man. Greg Jackson has also come out in defence of his fighter and his corner men.
BJ Penn’s forum has been buzzing none stop since the event and UFC president has come out and said this: -
“I think it’s legit, I don’t think that B.J. will deny that he lost to GSP. But there’s nobody that watched that fight that can deny that the cornerman didn’t rub Vaseline on GSP.”
“Let me tell you what, I’ve been in this business for a long time, man, and when you’re around the fight game and you bump into the cornermen or whoever, and you shake their hand and they got Vaseline on ‘em… okay? They shake your hand and you’ got Vaseline on your hand and I’m like “expletive! The guy just got Vaseline all over my hand!”
“It doesn’t come off your hand until you wash it with soap and water. You just don’t wipe Vaseline off with a towel… it doesn’t work that way. The stuff stays on you and you stay slippery and you stay greasy until you wash it off with soap.”
“… The guy who is applying Vaseline to his face should not and cannot touch any other part of his body. It’s illegal. It is absolutely illegal. And you see his cornerman rubs around his neck down onto chest, rubs his shoulders, then rubs his chest and back. That is 100 percent [expletive] illegal. Okay?”
What entertains me is that it has come to the UFC President to appear on a MMA radio chat to verify the details, it must have made real waves at Zuffa and UFC offices.
Personally I think GSP did enough to actually win legally, however cheating and making a mockery of the sport is not cool and totally out of order for all fans and MMA/UFC fighters.
When you have the biggest fight possible, two champions battling to be one of the best pound for pound fighters it is disrespectful to cheat, regardless whether it was by accident or not.
I agree with Dana White, not even BJ argued too much he lost however the advantage was evident and a rubber match is much needed to clear up the debate and a no contest is the best result for battle 2.
The bigger question that strikes me is the UFC big enough to force Thiago Alves and Kenny Florian wait for their chances at the GSP and BJ while this is cleared up or a rematch is fought. The likelihood is that the title fights will happen, BJ will defend his UFC lightweight title against Kenny Florian and Thiago Alves fighting Georges St Pierre for GSP’s Welterweight title.
I am sure Dana White will be a clever and let this one run and then clear up when the upcoming UFC events are decided, GSP Vs Alves looks done for UFC 100 wheveras BJ Penn Vs Florian looks like it will be pencilled for UFC 101 depending on when BJ is ready to return after his birth of his daughter recently.
Let me know your thoughts and feelings on this
