Yahoo! mail get a 3rd of all Yahoo! traffic

Thanks to the good folk at Hitwise they released figures about Yahoo! and their traffic.

Now as an internet geek and SEO its interesting to see where their traffic goes to, as Yahoo is basically a portal to their services and external services.

Here are the top 3 -

1. Yahoo! Mail 36.71%
2. Yahoo! 25.48%
3. Yahoo! Search 11.75%

To me, Yahoo Mail has always been popular because -
A. It is free
B. It offers cool features and integrates with many other useful services
C. It is always up and always improves with newer features unlike some…(hotmail, Gfail)

Other free email sites/services such as hotmail and gmail are still trying to catch up with visitors and features.

Yahoo is the second most visited site on the internet behind internet search rivals Google (according to compete) Yahoo and it’s 3829 subdomains (yes amazing right) has peaked to 138 million unique visitors in both November and December which shows a 3rd of that internet traffic went to Yahoo Mail. By my calculations over November and December 280 million visitors went to Yahoo and their subdomains, working on a simple calculation that is 93.3 millions visitors to Yahoo Mail. Crazy right!

One stat which I missed earlier is that Yahoo’s best service in my opinion Yahoo Answers gets only 1.03% of all Yahoo traffic, right wait for the maths (or math for my American and Canadian friends) that’s a whopping
2884000 visitors to their answers service. Personally speaking I do use Yahoo answers for anything I can’t get on search engines or can not be bothered to search for. You generally get an answer within minutes and generally it is good enough to let you carry on.

Lastly one point although this is based on US traffic, webmail is still definitely important as the Hitwise stats show -
Yahoo Mail receives 56.46% of traffic
Hotmail receives 19.14% of traffic
Gmail receives 10.82% of traffic

To me these stats give Yahoo a good base to start fighting back.

Ultimately with the recent Gmail Gfail as it is aptly known as and hotmail changing to windows live mail and the messing around with the look and feel it appears Yahoo can stand proudly as a dominant number 1 in online mail services.
