Video sites UK
Top 10 Video websites, based on market share of UK Internet visits to a Hitwise custom category of Video websites, February 2009:
1. YouTube: 62.9%
2. BBC iPlayer: 11.2%
3. Google Video: 2.0%
4. MegaVideo: 1.5%
5. MSN Video: 1.4%
6. Google Video UK: 1.3%
7. Channel 4 TV: 1.3%
8. MetaCafe: 1.2%
9. Vuze: 1.2%
10. Daily Motion: 1.1%
Hitwise has had a lot of SEO’s and webmasters questions their stats however, I came across these stats and thought I would throw my thoughts into the ring.
Google’s baby YouTube as you would expect is dominating the market in the UK, it used to be just videos but it firmly becoming a market place for advertisers, especially adverts and viral marketing campaigns, not to mention the film trailers have taken over. It was also a place where music video’s would be released and enjoy but not currently as Google couldnt reach any agreements – be interesting if it stays as popular as it is.
BBC’s very successful Iplayer has taken second place, this is by far the best offering for catch up TV and radio. The latest update is awesome and you enjoy some old tv programs also.
Google also takes up third place with Google video – some slight differences to youtube however many use it at their work places to get around the blocked Youtube.
Megavideo – which I have only used once is a well placed number 4, has more funny videos and has new music videos uploaded – although be careful has many have embedded ads which will take you off to a gambling site or worse.
Channel 4 sneak in with OD/catch “catch up” up service @ position number 7, their new approved service is definitely improved and you can watch your favourite shows from More 4, Channel 4 and E4.

Google market share
Following my previous post on market share I thought it was only right to dive deeper into the Google market dominance.
1. Google 68.32%
2. Gmail 9.79%
3. YouTube 9.27%
4. Google image search 5.76%
5. Google Maps 2.20%
Google search has 68.32% as you can imagine this would push all TLD’s together, would no doubt include toolbar searches too.
Gmail or Gfail as it has aptly been called recently has almost 10% share. Gmail has increased in recent years and with google labs working on Gmail’s features. In the past year their has been a mobile based version of Gmail, they have expanded the mail feature to domains and have opened up so you can forward mail and manage within Gmail – I can see this number increasing providing no more downtime.
Youtube – everyone’s favourite video website has 9.27% share. Youtube is turning itself into a marketing engine as well as the video centre of the website. Youtube last week in the UK failed to agree to include full length official music videos, this will effect numerous businesses and will ultimately make Youtube visitors annoyed, they also recently created a tool which strips sound from unofficial video’s another frustrating point for many users. I personally love Youtube and the possibilities it offers users and webmasters, Youtube and Google need to stop trying to be internet police and go back to offering the best user experience possible.
One section I was amazed to see was Google image search – I basically use it for humorous emails in the office and look alikes but never really as a business tool. I know many other people use imagine search for the same use. Having close to 6% market share does really surprise me but also points out that when Google offer good services for users it is used continuously.
And lastly Google Maps another service I use on my mobile, this is close to a sat nav and offers a real service. Many people use google maps for directions and embeds there maps into their website. I actually think Google Maps is the best free service available for maps.
All in all Google despite my reserves do offer good free services and figures generally match what is expect. Their best service Google Maps offers great mobile features and will no doubt take over a number of lesser sat nav services. Gmail or Gfail as named lately will attract more users as the new services via labs moves it closer to an online Outlook alternative and Google’s baby (behind advertising) search steals the show as expected and will no doubt increase unless Kumo Microsoft’s new search tool takes the web by storm and Yahoo keep moving away from their search solution.

Website market share
In the week where many sites had a revamp, a fresh look or new integrated features. I thought I would look at market share (hitwise assisted of course)
1. Google 6.41%
2. Yahoo Mail 4.75%
3. Yahoo 3.39%
4. MySpace 3.15%
5. Facebook 2.39%
6. eBay 1.62%
7. Windows Live Mail 1.48%
8. Yahoo search 1.46%
9. MSN 1.02%
10. Gmail 0.92%
11. YouTube 0.87
12. Google image search 0.54%
From my point of view, I would have expect Facebook to be higher than myspace, as the number of users is really high. This is definitely change later in the year.
I think the fact that email being high up in market share is for two reasons, emails are important and social networks email users when profiles, messages and new followers/friends add you.
Yahoo must be happy with both Yahoo mail (or Ymail depending on the user) and Yahoo being 2 and 3.
Google have number 1, 10, 11 and 12, this means their services are very good (pains me to say) and offer the best solutions for web users. I am sure Google’s Chrome browser will become very popular end of this year going into next.
eBay must be happy, with the ecomonic downturn, eBay still being so high shows that buying and selling goods are still important, finding deals and selling old bits and pieces is probably more important currently.

They hate: twitter
So the power of viral is taking over and the ever increasing visitors to youtube can vouch there is the brilliant to the downright weird.
I do not want to get into the whole linkbait thing but they have used good tactics to get grab attention…abusing twitter.
We had the facebook hating now its the turn of micro-blogging platform.
Check out their attention grabbing vid
Well done but I think the 4 million users would probably disagree
